The Fight Goes On
I wrote this little flash piece about Clove for Anomaly Con’s art cards this year. The talented Shoshanah Holl did the art for it. I hope you enjoy a little look into Clove’s past.

The Fight Goes On
by Carolyn Kay
Clove buttoned the purple spat over her ankle. The movement of her metal hoof caught the sunlight, momentarily blinding her and sending her mind back in time. She hadn’t always had prosthetic hooves. Hunters smashed her feet, crippling her, leaving her unable to defend her faun and her mate as they were shot down like common deer.
She shook her head and wiped a tear from her eye. It’d been nearly twenty years. She’d have been a grandmother by now. She missed her mate most of all, the feeling of love that overwhelmed her whenever she looked in his chestnut eyes. He had been a king among satyrs.
But that was the past. She’d left that life behind, devoting herself to serving the fae of the Hidden Lands.
Buffing a smudge from the inlaid leaf design along the side of her hoof, she was still in awe of the craftsmanship that had gone into the mechanics of her feet. They had served her well, and would continue to do so. The fight wasn’t over.
